STAMFORD BRIDGE MEETING

A packed meeting in Stamford Bridge on 10th November heard rail campaigners  being accused of wishing to destroy the historic village.

Minsters Rail campaign chairman George McManus said, ' It was a very lively meeting. The Stamford Bridge Cricket Club was crowded. The majority in attendance were clearly sympathetic to our aims, but a voluble minority made a number of significant points which we shall be

taking on board.'

He went on ' This meeting was organised by local people. I'm delighted we attracted a number of new members on the night and the Stamford Bridge residents clearly demonstrated a desire to know more. We look forward to further discussions.

;I'd like to thanks the Club for allowing us to use their facilities and the many people who turned out on a dark Autumn night to air their views.'

HALCROW GROUP

Engineering consultancy group Halcrow have become the first national organisation to sponsor the Minsters Rail Campaign. Rail Manager Keith Hampson said "this is the kind of community initative we are pleased to support"

Chairman George Macmanus added " I am delighted that Halcrow have recognised the efforts of the Minsters Rail Campaign to restore a much missed community railway with this sponsorship".

STAMFORD BRIDGE MEETING

The remaining 500 plus leaflets publicising the public meeting at Stamford Bridge on 10th November were distributed by 10 volunteers this morning, seven of whom were under 18. It is nice to see that these youngsters understand the importance of the rail link to York and Leeds and were prepared to give up their time to help. Two of our young volunteers had cycled over from Gowthorpe, three were from Stamford Bridge and two from York.

The campaign would like to thank Natasha and Elizabeth Bell, Rebecca, Robert and Ian Williams and Mark and Juliet Wells for their help in building support for the campaign.

STAMFORD BRIDGE MEETING

The Minsters Campaign is delighted to announce our first public meeting in Stamford Bridge on Thursday 10th November at 7.30 p.m. The venue is the Stamford Bridge Cricket Club in Low Catton Road.

Members of the campaign are looking forward to meeting local residents, discussing the plans for Stamford Bridge and answering questions about the campaign. One key thing to stress, is that the railway will not cross the old viaduct as properties have been built on the old alignment. The campaign will write to householders in the area prior to the meeting to ensure there is no misunderstanding of the campaign’s objectives.

Beverley to York Model Railway to feature at the Minster

Churchgoers and visitors will have an added incentive to visit the historic

Minster this Christmas, if any incentive is needed. The campaign to

re-open the direct rail link to York will be at the centre of a display in

the Minster's medieval North transcept over this year's holiday period.

Minsters' Rail Campaign, which seeks to re-open the Beverley to York railway

which was closed in 1965 under the Beeching Axe, have been given

permission to mount an exhibition which highlights the aims of their campaign.

The centrepiece will be a working model of the railway. Plans are being made

for a coin operated system which will help raise funds for the Minsters'

charities over the Christmas period.

Speaking today, campaign Chairman George McManus said, 'I am delighted

that Beverley Minster has given us permission to mount this exhibition. I hope

it will increase awareness of our aims and encourage even more visitors to

the Minster. I hope the model railway will attract children of all ages and

encourage the public to become members of our campaign.'

He went on, 'In the coming weeks we shall be announcing a railway station

design competition for schools which we hope will encourage local students

to design stations for the new line which might feature in our display.'
